Celebrating 46 Years of Ministry: Archbishop Makarios of Kenya: A Legacy of Faith

On January 11, 1979, a significant chapter began in the spiritual history of Kenya. By the grace of God, His Eminence Archbishop Makarios arrived in this vibrant East African nation, setting in motion a legacy that would inspire generations. Today, as we mark 46 years of his unwavering ministry as the Youth Patron of the Orthodox Church in Kenya, we pause to reflect on the profound impact of his leadership, dedication, and vision. With hearts full of gratitude, we thank God for the gift of life and for how far He has

brought the youth movement and the Church of Kenya under Archbishop Makarios’ stewardship.

A Journey Rooted in Faith and Service

Archbishop Makarios, born Andreas Tillyrides in Limassol, Cyprus, in 1945, brought with him a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to the Orthodox faith when he first set foot in Kenya. His arrival in 1979 was not merely a physical journey but the beginning of a transformative mission. Educated in theology at prestigious institutions like St. Sergius Orthodox Theological Institute in Paris and the University of Oxford, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy, Makarios was uniquely equipped to nurture the spiritual and intellectual growth of the Kenyan faithful. Yet, it was his humility and pastoral heart that truly set him apart.

Sent by Archbishop Makarios III of Cyprus, the late President and spiritual leader of his homeland, Makarios arrived in Kenya with a mandate to establish the Orthodox Patriarchal Ecclesiastical School in Nairobi. This institution, named in honor of his mentor, would become a cornerstone of Orthodox education in Africa, training clergy and fostering a vibrant youth movement that continues to thrive today. His early years in Kenya were marked by tireless efforts to organize and open the seminary, a task he undertook as a layperson before his ordination—an extraordinary testament to his devotion.

A Shepherd for the Youth

Archbishop Makarios’ ministry has always been deeply intertwined with the youth. On July 19, 1992, he was ordained a deacon, followed swiftly by his ordination to the priesthood on July 20, and his consecration as Bishop of Riruta on July 25—all within a remarkable week. This rapid ascent reflected not only his readiness to serve but also the urgent need for a shepherd to guide Kenya’s growing Orthodox community. In 2001, he was elevated to Metropolitan of Kenya and Irinoupolis (now the Archdiocese of Nairobi), a role in which he has continued to prioritize the spiritual formation of young people.

Under his leadership, the Orthodox Christian Youth Association of Kenya (OCYAK) has flourished, becoming a beacon of hope and unity. His vision has empowered young Kenyans to grow in faith, engage in service, and embrace their identity as Orthodox Christians in a diverse and dynamic society. From educational retreats to community outreach, Makarios has instilled in the youth a sense of purpose and belonging, ensuring that the Church remains a living, breathing force in their lives.

A Legacy of Growth and Gratitude

Over the past 46 years, Archbishop Makarios has overseen the expansion of the Orthodox Church in Kenya, establishing suffragan dioceses in Nyeri, Kisumu, and Eldoret, and nurturing a pan-African community of believers. The Theological School in Nairobi, often described by Makarios himself as a “miracle,” stands as a testament to his commitment to education and unity. Students from across the continent—Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, and beyond—have passed through its doors, many going on to serve as clergy or pursue further studies in Greece and the United States.

His Eminence’s influence extends beyond the classroom and the altar. Fluent in Greek, English, French, Russian, Italian, and numerous African languages, Makarios has bridged cultures and communities, translating divine services into local vernaculars and making Orthodoxy accessible to all. His scholarly contributions, including hundreds of articles on ecclesiastical history, reflect a mind devoted to both preserving tradition and adapting it to the needs of the present.

As we celebrate this milestone, we cannot overlook the countless acts of love and humility that define his ministry. From visiting rural parishes to supporting the construction of churches, schools, and clinics, Archbishop Makarios has embodied the gospel call to serve the least of these. His presence has turned barren lands into spiritual gardens, offering hope to children and families who look to the future with renewed faith

Giving Thanks for 46 Years

Today, January 12, 2025, we stand in awe of God’s faithfulness. For 46 years, He has sustained Archbishop Makarios, granting him health, strength, and wisdom to lead His flock. We thank God for the youth movement that has blossomed under his care—a movement that continues to bear fruit in the lives of countless young Kenyans. We thank Him for a Church that, through Makarios’ guidance, has grown not only in numbers but in depth of spirit and outreach. As we honor His Eminence on this occasion, let us recommit ourselves to the values he has championed: faith, education, unity, and service. May God grant Archbishop Makarios many more years to shepherd His people, and may the youth of Kenya continue to rise as witnesses to the transformative power of Christ’s love.
