Feeding the Children: Christ’s Call to Serve "The Least of These"

In the Gospel of Matthew, Christ teaches us, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matt. 25:40). At the Orthodox Christian Youth Association of Kenya (OCYAK), we are heeding this sacred call by providing meals for the most vulnerable members of our society—our children. Every day, through God’s grace, we feed 120 children, including 30 orphans, reminding them that they are loved and not forgotten.

Our Mission: Living the Gospel Through Acts of Mercy

Inspired by the teachings of Christ and the Holy Fathers, we see feeding the hungry as an expression of the divine command to show mercy and compassion. These children, who face daily struggles due to poverty, find hope and comfort in the meals we provide. Our program not only addresses their immediate physical hunger but also reflects the Church’s deeper mission to nourish souls, offering love, security, and hope for the future.

St. John Chrysostom once said, “Feeding the hungry is a greater work than raising the dead.” At OCYAK, we believe that through the simple act of sharing a meal, we participate in Christ’s ministry, becoming His hands and feet in the world.

The Impact: More Than Food, A Lifeline to God’s Love

Every meal we provide is not just food for the body but also a reminder of God’s boundless love and providence. For the 30 orphans in our care, each meal is a testament that the Church has not abandoned them. By nourishing their bodies, we are helping them to experience the fullness of life that God intends for every person, as they grow into their God-given potential.

Orthodox Theology in Action in Kenya: Feeding the Body and Soul

The Holy Fathers often remind us that caring for the physical needs of others is inseparable from our spiritual life. As St. Basil the Great taught, “The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry; the coat unused in your closet belongs to the one who needs it.” In serving these 120 children, OCYAK seeks to embody this ancient wisdom by becoming instruments of Christ’s love.

We provide not only food but also opportunities for spiritual growth. Before each meal, children gather for prayer, acknowledging that all good things come from God. Through this, they are reminded that the Church walks with them, spiritually and physically.
