INTERFAITH COLLABORATION: BUILDING BRIDGES FOR CLIMATE ACTION IN KENYA

Host: Virgin Mary Orthodox Church Mutuini, Nairobi
Date: 30th June 2024
Time: 8:00AM-2:00PM
BACKGROUND INFORMATION:
In 2024, youth engagement in climate action is paramount, particularly following the Global Stock Take (GST) and the implementation of the Paris Agreement. The GST’s acknowledgment of insufficient progress in global emissions reduction underscores the urgency for action. African nations, despite contributing minimally to emissions, bear the brunt of climate impacts, emphasizing the need for climate justice and adherence to the Common But Differentiated Responsibilities (CBDR) principle. Kenya, like many African countries, faces daily challenges such as droughts, floods, and food insecurity, necessitating prioritized adaptation and resilience efforts. The youth, recognizing these challenges, have actively engaged in advocating for climate action, influencing policy review processes, and participating in decision-making forums.
PLAN:
The workshop aims to bring together youth from the Orthodox Church, the Methodist Church, the Anglican Church, and the Presbyterian Church nationwide. It will adopt an all-inclusive approach, considering sectoral-thematic, regional, gender, and demographic diversity. Participants will engage in discussions, workshops, and collaborative activities to foster interfaith dialogue and action on climate change.
OBJECTIVES:
- Facilitate dialogue and collaboration among youth from diverse religious backgrounds on climate action.
- Raise awareness about the importance of locally led climate action in complementing global efforts.
- Share best practices and success stories of local climate action initiatives.
- Discuss the role of faith actors and young people in implementing climate action in Kenya.
- Mobilize youth for ongoing advocacy and action on climate change.
CONCLUSION:
The Joint Youth Sensitization Forum aims to harness the collective power of youth across different faith traditions to address the urgent issue of climate change. By fostering interfaith collaboration and highlighting the role of locally led climate action, the workshop seeks to empower young people to become catalysts for positive change in their communities and beyond. Together, we can build bridges for climate action and work towards a more sustainable future.
