OCYAK Leadership Attends 65th General Assembly of NCCK at Jumuia

Date: August 18, 2024

This past week, the Orthodox Christian Youth Association of Kenya (OCYAK) leadership, together with His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, had the distinct honor of attending the 65th General Assembly of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) at Jumuia. James Mwaura, the Chairman, and Joshua Kimani, the General Secretary, represented OCYAK at this significant event. The gathering provided an opportunity to interact with key church leaders, strengthening relationships between Orthodox Christian youth and other religious institutions in Kenya.

Opening Ceremony and Keynote by Chief Justice Lady Martha Koome

The opening ceremony was graced by Chief Justice Lady Martha Koome, who commended religious leaders for their critical role in providing guidance and direction to both the Church and broader community. Her address emphasized the essential collaboration between religious institutions and national governance in fostering peaceful coexistence, youth empowerment, and social justice.

Panel Discussion on Youth Engagement

A highlight of the event was a panel discussion in which Joshua Kimani, General Secretary of OCYAK, was invited to participate. The panel, titled “Engagement of Gen Z with Church Leaders in Kenya,” also included:

  • Bishop Naftali of the Methodist Church of Kenya
  • Rev. Canon Chris Kinyanjui, General Secretary of NCCK
  • Kasmuel Mc Oure, Youth Activist
  • Rev. Mutembei, National Youth Chairman of NCCK
  • Rev. Jackline Makena from the World Council of Churches (WCC)

The panel addressed the challenges faced by Generation Z in connecting with traditional religious structures. They also explored solutions to foster deeper engagement between young people and church leadership, particularly in light of recent events, such as the youth protest in Nyeri, where youths stormed a church in Nyeri after elders dismissed their reverend.

Strengthening Relationships and Building Community

We are incredibly grateful to His Eminence Archbishop Makarios for his unwavering support and for leading the Orthodox delegation at this pivotal gathering. His presence was a strong testament to the Orthodox Church’s commitment to youth involvement and interdenominational cooperation.

Additionally, our heartfelt appreciation goes to the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) for their warm hospitality and continued support of the youth movement in Kenya. The 65th General Assembly was a fruitful occasion for fostering stronger relationships between OCYAK, other Christian denominations, and youth leaders across the country.

Together, we are inspired to move forward with renewed vigor to strengthen our communities, uplift young people, and continue serving both God and society.
